Rega San Marzano D.O.P. Tomatoes

Rega San Marzano D.O.P. tomatoes are whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes packed in tomato puree (the tomatoes make up 64% of the can), grown in the volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius and harvested by hand. They have a low acidity and a natural sweetness, which makes them a classic choice for pizza sauce and pasta sauces, and they come in 400g and 800g cans.

What D.O.P. means

D.O.P. stands for Protected Designation of Origin, and for San Marzano it means the tomatoes are grown, peeled and canned in the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino area of Campania. Tomatoes labelled "San Marzano style" or sold without the D.O.P. mark do not have to meet that rule, so this is the can to buy if origin matters to you.

How to use them

Crush them by hand, season and let them rest for a simple pizza sauce, or simmer them down for pasta. Our recipe for pizza sauce with tinned San Marzano tomatoes shows how.
